about
Over the Winter of 2020-21 Rian and I were working on some things, talking a good bit and then making music in our separate homes. One of the horses at the farm died, leaving a lonely grieving horse behind. A whole world of sadness and terror were held in that horse's eye- It brought so many things to mind about loss and something came back to me that I had read by the Palestinian writer Ghassan Kanafani, about oranges in Jaffa, and the sadness associated with the loss and destruction of their homeland. Rian's percussion on this is terrifying.
from 'The Land of Sad Oranges' by Ghassan Kanafani
“I watched the long line of cars enter Lebanon, leaving long behind them the land of orange. I started wailing. Your mother was still looking in silence at the oranges. In your father’s eyes were the reflection of all the orange trees he had left behind for the Israelis, all the clean orange trees he had planted one by one, glittered in his face. He failed to stop the tears that filled up in his eyes, when he came to face the head police officer. When we reached Saida in the afternoon, we became refugees.....
We were heaped up there, withdrawn from our childhood, away from the land of oranges…oranges that died, an old farmer once told us, if watered by strange hands. ”
lyrics
words:
Hold my gaze
unblinking lids
hardly any eye lashes left.
and the taste of smog is the sheen of your new hair.
the sound of cars is the fold in your straight skirt.
Terror tastes acrid
the whole of the flavour
acrimonious turn in tongue
Sadness is a convulsion
the throat rejects.
Happiness is a sunny spit.
hard to catch the taste of it
Violence
is the taste
of over-ripe
oranges
teeming bluebottled business
sticky flies.
you avert
your eyes.
coz as you think,
-you will lose
your deception
betray
-faster than the blink.
of the eye
that holds you.
